Below we have listed resources for behavioral health counseling and treatment in major cities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. These resources are just a starting point, and we urge you to take your time when looking for assistance. Wherever you live, start your search close to home: check with your doctor, family members, friends, church, or any organizations you might belong to and ask for referrals for therapists and counselors they might recommend.
When seeking help with any kind of behavioral health challenge, whether for yourself or a family member, it is extremely important to find the right person—someone who you believe is caring and thoughtful and who takes the time to understand your situation.
FAMILY SUPPORT RESOURCES does not receive compensation of any kind from the organizations and individuals listed below. They are listed merely as our name implies: resources for your evaluation and potential benefit. The appearance on our list of resources in no way implies any special recommendation on our part. However, that being said, we have done extensive research, and we only include organizations and individuals that have received the highest ratings from their clients.
You’ll notice that in almost every city in the following list, we include a listing for the NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS. This is a national non-profit organization with almost 1800 chapters around the U.S. In most cities, they have an actual office, where people can stop by and receive support and guidance. NAMI is consistently highly rated in all the cities where we have included them, and they are an important and highly regarded resource in the field of mental and behavioral health.
Another resource you might want to use is PSYCHOLOGY TODAY.COM. This organization has a comprehensive listing of practicing psychologists and psychiatrists all over the country.
However, they are only a listing service. They do not have any kind of physical facilities. This site might be helpful to you if you live in areas of the country that aren’t close to a major city.
When reaching out to treatment providers, we always encourage people to begin by connecting with resources from licensed mental health providers. While FAMILY SUPPORT RESOURCES believes in the power and efficacy of treatment, you are responsible for interviewing and selecting the provider or treatment. As FAMILY SUPPORT RESOURCES does not provide treatment services, FAMILY SUPPORT RESOURCES cannot accept responsibility for any of the services provided by these or any other providers.
